Nose News

Our nose is a powerful tool to help us enjoy life and alert us to danger. Humans have about 40 million olfactory receptor neurons that detect up to one trillion different odors. The olfactory gland is located in a cavity between the eyes.

How Do You Smell?
An odorant will dissolve into the mucus of the olfactory membrane and then bind to a receptor. The activation pattern results a unique smell. The gland accommodates to odour within about 10 minutes and you don’t notice the smell anymore, allowing new odours to be appreciated, (or not). Our nose helps us enjoy our meals as the tongue can only detect salt, bitter, sweet and sour.
