Antibiotics and Your Immune System

One of the issues we’re seeing in medicine today is the over-prescription of antibiotics. Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections; the trouble is that bacterial infections must be diagnosed through culture tests and most modern doctors are too busy to deal with the extra work of diagnosing a bacterial infection properly.

Instead, the patient receives a broad-spectrum antibiotic which destroys a wide range of bacteria in the body, both harmful and beneficial. This has the effect of suppressing your immune system. A side-effect is that eventually the bacteria become immune to the medication, and we end up with resistant strains like MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and C. Difficile.

Acupuncture can help boost your immune system – you need regular maintenance treatments (one every month or six weeks). We recommend these treatments for anyone who is regularly exposed to, or could be especially harmed by, infectious agents, particularly:

  • The elderly
  • Children
  • Medical professionals
  • Daycare workers
  • Anyone who is under a lot of stress

In our next blog post we’ll share some tips to help keep you safe from infections.
