Summer Skin Protection

Some tips to help protect your skin this summer:

  • Wear a hat if you’re going to be out in the sun
  • Use sunscreen in moderation, if you’re planning to be outside for a longer period of time
  • Caucasian rules for sun exposure: spend 20 minutes a day getting direct sun, or 40 minutes of shade for optimum vitamin D production. People with darker or lighter skin should adjust this time accordingly – the darker your skin tone, the longer you can be exposed to the sun without harmful effects.
  • Use tanning booths in moderation; tanning can be helpful for treating SAD if you do it once a month at the darker times a year, but avoid excess.
  • Drink lots of water to help prevent sunburn – hydrated skin is better protected.
